What could iPlayer become? Prototyping the BBC’s streaming future

At BBC iPlayer, alongside feature work, I made “provotypes”: quick, deliberately provocative prototypes that got the team debating where iPlayer should go next.

Each one answered a “How might we” question, from finding something new to watch to making iPlayer feel more like TV.

How might we make it easier to find something to watch?

Search that works like browse: recent and popular searches, channels and categories, all before you type. It gives lots of ways to inspire and surprise, each one easy to test and refine.

How might we make it effortless to find a new show to watch?

When a show ends, you get three choices for what to watch next: one popular, one related and one surprising. The choice is easy, but it isn’t narrow.

How might we reimagine the linear TV experience?

Real-time previews of live channels: channel flipping, rebuilt for streaming.

How might we make iPlayer feel more like watching TV and less like a using a website?

More choices for what to watch next, each with a live preview, so choosing feels like flicking through TV rather than reading a web page.
